To the true accelerated world! – Final words about Accel World

And that was my other longer title that I’ve finished now.

The good

  • Delicious action scenes whenever necessary
  • In a positive and negative way, depending on your tastes: this show fits the shounen category perfectly. If you like shounen series, this won’t disappoint. Especially the latter half of the show is everything you know and love from these kind of shows.
  • Had some really cool background music and stage designs.

The bad

  • New information was sometimes introduced whenever it was needed, and thus gave a superficial feeling.
  • What every action series does too much: talking. A lot of friendship speeches and monologues during the battles.
  • Main character getting a lot of chicks which doesn’t fit the way he was introduced in the beginning.

Two more shows, two more weeks left.

Previously

Haruyuki and Takumu were fighting Seiji in a final battle, and right when they were almost killed, Snow Black arrives to save the day.

About this episode

With that beginning, I was seriously wishing that they wouldn’t pull some friendship thing with Seiji, that in the end Seiji turns into a good guy. The thing with Seiji is that he was created as an evil antagonist, not somebody who could turn into a fun main character later on. And the same in the end actually, where Seiji was begging that Haruyuki spares him. I was really glad that Haruyuki finished Seiji off. You can’t trust him anyways, so why believe him? Really sorry about the delays these days. I’m kinda busy with school and life in general.

Previously

Seiji and Haruyuki are going to have a final showdown.

About this episode

It was a bit obvious, but Chiyuri still is on the “good” side. It still bothers me that we haven’t heard anything about her motives though. They never even bothered to ask. I wonder what exactly happened here, because there are some blanks to fill in. Chiyuri might betray them later after all, but it doesn’t look like it. What was also interesting is how Seiji didn’t react to Chiyu switching sides. Maybe because he really believed that Chiyuri supported him, or maybe because he knew she wouldn’t and wanted her as a hostage and nothing more. Read more of this post

Sword Art Online was so sweet this week.

Previously

Haruyuki and Blood Leopard went to investigate Seiji and found out that another player, Rust Jigsaw, doesn’t appear on the matching list.

About this episode

Wait, Haruyuki getting furious was due to the incarnate system? And the incarnate system is a double-edged sword? I understand why they hide it now, but that’s a bit weird too. It wasn’t presented like this at all when Sky Raker explained it, and you’d think that she would mention something crucial like this. And it’s also strange that imagination drives you insane. What was interesting however, is how this now explains the Chrome Disaster. Read more of this post

Small tip: do not major in archeology.

Previously

Seiji defeated Haruyuki and Takumu and spread rumors about Haruyuki.

About this episode

Yuniko is back! I was kind of happy to see her again for some reason actually. Especially when she acted so cute lol. I don’t know why she did, because the others already knew about her other side, but she sure did and it was pretty cute even. I had a lot of fun when she called him “as round as ever”, I can’t believe she said that with such a cute face. Read more of this post

I watched the last four episodes of School Days today. That last episode… I don’t think I have to say anymore because you know what I mean, but it was really awesome.

About this episode

Oh, right. There was this main plot going on. The thrill of the cliffhanger disappeared after that side story that lasted for three weeks. And besides, the chronology is a bit messed up now as well: where Snow Black was coming home in the side story, it’s three days earlier in the main story. I didn’t like their timing with this side story at all because this is the coolest part of the story yet and they ruined the pace completely. I’m not sure if this was the same way in the original or not, I doubt that somehow. Read more of this post

After today’s Sword Art Online, I doubt Accel World can top it… Also, I’ve finally given up on those 600 mb releases and am trying the avi of this.

Snow Black met two burst linkers from Okinawa who introduce her to their master. Snow Black seems to have known that master.

About this episode

Kay guys, if you didn’t notice it yet: we’ve got five episodes after this. That’s right, five. So getting a decent conclusion is pretty much out of the question now. Of course I already knew that the light novel series isn’t finished either, so it’s not surprising, but I’m still kind of disappointed about this. Wasn’t Snow Black supposed to defeat the other kings and find out the true meaning of the game? Up till now I feel like everything that happened was a side story, and not really heading anywhere. Maybe except for the Chrome Disaster arc, where Haruyuki kept the item somehow. Maybe these five episodes will be about Seiji now? I guess that would be satisfying enough if they don’t ruin the pace at the end. Read more of this post

Sword Art Online is awesome by the way, I can’t believe that they’re written by the same guy.

Previously

Sky Raker taught Haruyuki how to use imagination in the accelerated world and gave him an item, Gale Thruster, too. Will he be able to fly again now?

About this episode

Just look how a bit of positive attitude can make such a difference. Haruyuki just walked into the classroom without feeling terrible unlike yesterday. That sure paid off. It’s not until then that he realises that all his shit hasn’t gone away yet. Even I almost forgot that after last week. Read more of this post

Writing reviews in an airplane like a pro. On another note, Utada Hikaru cd on the plane ftw. Didn’t know she also had some awesome upbeat songs.

Previously

Seiji used his ability to steal Haruyuki’s wings. Haruyuki and Chiyuri were totally depressed and Haruyuki also got into a fight with Takumu. He later met Ash Roller who brought him to his parent and the person who was previously the closest to the sky.

About this episode

Still can’t get over the huge differences between Sky Raker and Ash. They must be connected somehow, but that story may never see the light of day. Read more of this post

Written as mermaid, read as a blog entry.

The kid who beat Takumu at kendo, Noumi, turns out to be a burst linker and really evil and twisted and he threatens both Haruyuki and Chiyuri. Haruyuki challenges him to a battle.

About this episode

Here starts week two without Snow Black. As much as I like her character, these are pretty much the best episodes we’ve had so far and I don’t really miss her for some reason. It’s exactly how I notice that she’s gone that I appreciate her character though. I think that everything would’ve been a lot different if Snow Black had been around and now everyone is less in control of things.

Oh by the way, since his full name is now revealed as Noumi Seiji (I’m not sure if I missed his first name or not, but I didn’t know it last episode), so I’m going to refer to him as Seiji from now on. Maybe a bit confusing but I try to be consistent with names which can be kinda challenging with the complicated Japanese naming stuff.

Unexpectedly good action to start the episode off. I really liked the parts where Haruyuki was beating up Seiji, they were animated well and without interruptions like moral discussions and shouting for the most part. But there has to be a catch: Haruyuki can’t just win against the biggest enemy he’s faced to date. And then it comes. I kinda saw it coming with Seiji’s remark that he would take something and afterwards the “previous owner” thing, but I was still at a loss when Haruyuki actually lost his wings. The only weird thing was that he didn’t beat Seiji on the ground, which he was perfectly capable of. Instead, he wasted a lot of time standing around. Not that it would have given him his wings back, but still… At least he could win the fight that way.

And then it ends. Haruyuki is completely defeated and lost. Drama everywhere. Chiyuri starts crying too, probably more because of the real life events than because of Haruyuki’s loss. There was no doubt about who had won and who had lost now. I’m not sadistic or anything, but I think that this was a really great part of the show. I know that victory will come after this loss (somehow) and this means that Seiji will get what he deserves later. This harshness will make Haruyuki’s victory later so much sweeter.

I don’t have to say anything about this picture, it’s obvious.

And more drama. As Haruyuki is feeling terrible, he lets out his frustrations on Takumu. I feel sorry for the guy, who doesn’t know what’s going on and is feeling bad too. But wait a minute. Chiyuri choosing somebody? I thought that Takumu and Chiyuri were together already? Or was I wrong about this all along? The MAL database seems to agree with me and I don’t want to do a lot of research because I might spoil stuff. So what is all this talk about Chiyuri choosing somebody? Now that I think about it though, Takumu and Chiyuri haven’t been behaving as boyfriend and girlfriend that much on-screen. Might just be that we only see what we see, I bet I’m overthinking. Takumu is also saying stuff out of sadness, anger, frustration.

But Accel World does a nice job not making stuff too depressing. I felt all the sadness that was going on, but it didn’t drag. The first half is finished, and now stuff is looking up. The timing was perfect, not too long and not too short. So back comes, surprisingly enough (except if you watched the opening animations and the preview), Ash Roller. I was wondering what he was up to. He is now what I didn’t expect him to be: an awesome rival. It might be his kind of evil look, but I never thought of him as the caring type. Still, he and Haruyuki built up quite a relationship offscreen. “Remember all those battles?” No I don’t, but it’s nice to know that this was all happening. The only part that’s annoying about Ash is all his half-English lines that don’t make any sense.

It was over too quickly. This episode really flew along, which is good I guess. I’m really curious about this parent now. She looks so much different from Ash, which is funny. They know each other well in real life (probably) if she brought Ash into the game. And she is also the person who was closest to flying before Haruyuki. This is going to be really interesting. I wonder if she’ll teach Haruyuki a new technique to fly or maybe even give him new wings somehow. I don’t think the latter is possible – Seiji will have to give them back before Haruyuki can fly again and he’s not going to hand them over just like that.

Rating: +

This episode was one hell of a ride, but a really good one. This is the best arc Accel World has seen up till now and I’m enjoying every second of it. First the loss, now the training to overcome his loss. All in one episode with a great pacing. One or two weeks of the Seiji arc I guess, and a ton of other new characters too. So many goodies to look forward to.
