Anime episode reviews.

Final post (?)

So maybe you noticed that I’m not on schedule with my stuff these days. Partially I’m busier than I used to be. Partially I just don’t have the motivation to blog anymore. So there you have it. I’m not going to take on new shows and I’m also stopping with Zettai Karen Children. Maybe in the future I’ll start again, who knows. It was a fun ride though, and I’m happy that I got to go so far. I have 163 posts, and I’ve reviewed a total of 123 episodes and a bunch of manga chapters too. That’s a lot when you think about it, it didn’t feel like that much but I guess it’s half a years work. I enjoyed most of it, and I got to review a bunch of fun series. I feel proud with what I accomplished here, but I guess it’s time to move on.

I’m not giving up anime blogging entirely: a few friends and I are working on a Dutch anime blog, so probably most of you can’t read it, and I am going to write stuff over there. My plan is to have a less tight schedule and do more just what I feel like writing about instead of working on six-five-four series per week. If you’re interested, feel free to check it out.

To, well… wherever this is – Final words about Binbougami ga!

The good

  • They do a great job on over-the-top humor with a lot of running, stuff breaking down and shouting. You know the drill.
  • Ichiko’s dilemma’s and character development is fun to watch. A lot happened in those 13 episodes actually.
  • A bunch of fun characters, especially Momou.
  • References are always fun, and they had a few good ones that I understood. I bet that I missed a lot of them though.

The bad

  • Maybe a bit too much focus on breasts and all the other ecchi stuff. It was funny a few times, but not every time. I’m not really fond of Bobby as the perverted character either.
  • Not every episode was good, honestly. There were a bunch of bland episodes that didn’t do much for me. Especially a few serious ones that weren’t very interesting.
  • It usually was the same problem in the serious episodes: friends/others vs herself. It got predictable after a while.

And that was the last post now. Yeah.

Previously

Momiji turned into a nicer version of herself, but now she’s forced to turn back by walking into a pile of trash.

About this episode

And I thought that it was just an epic way to show a finale. But it wasn’t. Apparently this story isn’t finished yet, and in typical style of this show they save Momiji in the last minute. And then a usual escape starts, with Teddy turning serious. He looked cool and I’m pretty sure that it was a reference that I don’t understand. Of course, a fall won’t hurt Ichiko with her fortune. Never.

I almost found some respect for Bobby when he chose his job over helping the girls. Almost. Until of course… yeah, you know what I mean.

This looks cool, somehow. Go Ranmaru.

I actually really liked the battle that followed. This episode really did that right as well. The battle between Momou and Ranmaru was really cool, but also had the hilarious conclusion that we all kind of expected. “Please punch me harder!” Especially in his dog-form, it looked really funny.

I was also hoping for an epic Ichiko vs Teddy, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we actually got a twist. I was wondering why Momiji had time till sunrise, now we find it out. The explanation took really long, but the short version is that she’ll die. That is good enough for me. I wonder why Teddy couldn’t have just told Ichiko this in the first place though, that would have saved a bunch of time. Still, it’s an interesting twist and a good way to force Momiji to turn back after all.

I liked it how Ichiko asked Keita for advice. After everything that happened between them, somehow they did get closer. They really took each other serious. Keita, like Momiji, is actually good at giving advice to Ichiko.

It ended really well too, exactly the way you’d want it to end. Ichiko saves Momiji and turns her back, and then some typical fighting between the two of them. And Bobby got arrested lol.

I’m actually genuinely interested in Binbougami ga! Darkness – Oppai now. That looks really epic. Best trailer yet. So of course that means it’s fake.

What can I say? Had some hilarious moments, the epic fight and a good serious moment as well. I think that this episode did well capturing everything that I liked about this series.

To the election booth! Final words about Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate

The good

  • First and most important for a series like this: a really great and likeable cast. I can honestly say that I enjoyed all five heroines and that’s a first.
  • Mixing the campaign and the darker politics of the school with the general harem plot gave this show an extra dimension and explained every character’s presence and role really well. Most of them weren’t in there just because Yuuki stumbled upon them, but they all had their own distinct role in the show.
  • The soundtrack had some epic tunes. Maybe a bit too grand, but fun to hear.
  • This is the only show where I have rated every episode positively. I’m not kidding here either: there is no “weak” episode, it’s a fun ride from the beginning to the end.

The bad

  • TOO SHORT. It desperately needed way more episodes to handle some more of the characters (especially Mifuyu and Isara) and to make the drama better too. In most episodes they were forced to do two routes at once just to get everything in there. Somehow, the more serious parts felt a bit lacking.
  • Personal preferences here, but I’d rather have a bit more drama and a bit less comedy. The pace was a bit slow in the beginning too.
  • Well, it’s a harem game adaption so what do you expect. Multiple female characters falling in love with the protagonist for no apparent reason is the norm here. If you don’t like that, go watch something else.

The end of the season is always a bit sad, when you see your favorite shows go. Especially ones you enjoyed a lot…

When Chisato and Yuuki wanted to kiss, somebody knocked Yuuki out and kidnapped Chisato.

About this episode

It didn’t dawn on me the first time that I watched this, but since I practically watch the episode twice when I review them: wow, Yuuki was running for about five hours. He got the first call at 6:30 and arrived at around 11:30. I really respect Yuuki for that. He never hesitated and knew he was giving up his speech for this.

Yuina really scares me. I was wondering already why she was opposing Yuuki, but now we finally found this out. What Yakumo did made a lot of sense, but Yuina was scheming with general affairs. What I wondered about a bit was why Kana almost mentioned that there were photo’s even though she knew that Yuina was behind it. At least, I assume that she knew from the pictures she took. Maybe she didn’t see the last one with Yuina in it, because she didn’t seem to have any memory loss. Michiru knew something was wrong with Yuina though, but I’m not exactly sure why. A hunch maybe? Something else I’m curious about is why nobody at the food club said anything about Michiru’s absence. You’d think that people would be curious about that, and I bet Michiru never told them either. Just a bit of food for thought.

It’s really scary how this school is corrupt to no end, with that reporter boy who has to dress as a girl. Somebody raised that question before, now we get an answer. The scary part is that the school looks fine on the outside, but that there are some really dark things going on in the shadows. Maybe the best example was how they encouraged bullying financial aid students so the rest of the student body gets along.

So nobody ever bothered to check Kana’s smartphone? Bad move. But there are the pictures that they needed. But Yakumo decided to support the food club again now, and everything went well after that. I didn’t expect Yuina to be on the line directly (rather, a subordinate), but this worked very well.

Sleeping beauty?

It’s a bit strange how Chisato is lying there in a box, sleeping, but wakes up immediately when Yuuki comes in. Besides, scenes like this seem to pop up every now and then in anime for some reason. I never understood these, it would make way more sense to tie her up or something like that.

I thought the part where Yuuki starts his speech and his time is up immediately was kind of funny. He got to talk a bit though, thanks to Satsuki and Yakumo. You knew he’d win when he starts talking like that though.

Yay for vice-president Satsuki. They do make a good team like that (and a good couple, if I were to decide this), so I bet they’ll do a great job in the end. I also really liked the conclusion with Yuuki and Chisato with the chocolate that was split in three parts now. It showed a bond between them, but also how Chisato now sees Yuuki and Daiki as two individuals. I’m happy for them and this is my second favorite pairing so I’m happy.

Rating: +

A good end to a good show. Most loose threads were tied and we got a satisfying conclusion of both Yuuki’s love life and the election. I actually checked on the VN, but it isn’t translated so that’s a shame. If that ever happens, I’m in for sure. I’d love to see how it differs from the anime.

I downloaded the Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate ending single, and that b-side is amazingly good.

Yuuki was captured by Yakumo for sneaking around and found out that Michiru is actually a spy for the public safety committee.

About this episode

We kinda knew what Yakumo first told Yuuki, since it was the very first thing we saw in episode 1. I actually rewatched that part last week to check if that was Kana or not. But then the camera zooms away to something that Yuuki ignored for the latter half of the episode: his childhood friend. What I actually liked about this part was that it was Mifuyu who “saved” Chisato and not Yuuki. Yuuki didn’t turn into an omnipotent lead who saves all the girls from trouble. Besides, there hasn’t been a lot of interaction between the heroines so this was also nice to see. Read more of this post

Binbougami ga! – Episode 12

Maybe not an anime, but series seven of Doctor Who is brilliant up till now.

Ichiko and Ranmaru washed Momiji and now she’s turned all sweet and beautiful.

About this episode

New Momiji is around, ’nuff said. I enjoyed her being so different and sweet. But that the same time I’m not sure what to make of this, like Ichiko. I wasn’t ready to trust her yet, since Momiji can be scheming something behind the scenes. Read more of this post

To the true accelerated world! – Final words about Accel World

And that was my other longer title that I’ve finished now.

The good

  • Delicious action scenes whenever necessary
  • In a positive and negative way, depending on your tastes: this show fits the shounen category perfectly. If you like shounen series, this won’t disappoint. Especially the latter half of the show is everything you know and love from these kind of shows.
  • Had some really cool background music and stage designs.

The bad

  • New information was sometimes introduced whenever it was needed, and thus gave a superficial feeling.
  • What every action series does too much: talking. A lot of friendship speeches and monologues during the battles.
  • Main character getting a lot of chicks which doesn’t fit the way he was introduced in the beginning.

Haruyuki and Takumu were fighting Seiji in a final battle, and right when they were almost killed, Snow Black arrives to save the day.

About this episode

With that beginning, I was seriously wishing that they wouldn’t pull some friendship thing with Seiji, that in the end Seiji turns into a good guy. The thing with Seiji is that he was created as an evil antagonist, not somebody who could turn into a fun main character later on. And the same in the end actually, where Seiji was begging that Haruyuki spares him. I was really glad that Haruyuki finished Seiji off. You can’t trust him anyways, so why believe him? Really sorry about the delays these days. I’m kinda busy with school and life in general.

Seiji and Haruyuki are going to have a final showdown.

About this episode

It was a bit obvious, but Chiyuri still is on the “good” side. It still bothers me that we haven’t heard anything about her motives though. They never even bothered to ask. I wonder what exactly happened here, because there are some blanks to fill in. Chiyuri might betray them later after all, but it doesn’t look like it. What was also interesting is how Seiji didn’t react to Chiyu switching sides. Maybe because he really believed that Chiyuri supported him, or maybe because he knew she wouldn’t and wanted her as a hostage and nothing more. Read more of this post
